Spring afternoon. The gardens, fields, and cool, open air. I remember setting out to discover what made that place so captivating. The first thing you noticed was the scent of lilies and peonies carried by a gentle breeze that seemed to flow through everything.

The kind that makes you believe it will never end.

The hills were covered in them, overlooking a grand audience below. Painters and writers spent time there in their serenity, alongside those who came to be still.

Dozens of people flew kites as the wind favored them, while some preferred to watch from parasols.

I had never really looked at a parasol before that afternoon.

Their light colors and intricate designs make them beautiful among the soft greens of the grass. They’re smaller than umbrellas, but much quieter. The name holds something: para- to protect from, and sol- the sun.

They were made for afternoons exactly like that one. I didn’t know then how much I’d think about them after.

It started to rain.

Gray skies arrived and transformed the landscape the way a painting changes when the light in the room shifts. Muted colors took over, and most people began to leave, but not in low spirits. The rain gave them something to remember and carry home.

I stayed a little longer than I should have. The low light and soft pour produced a quiet I didn’t expect to find, and couldn’t quite explain when I tried to describe it later.
